My major influences as a designer are like many artists: widely varied and not confined to a single field of enterprise.
A very abbreviated list, restricted just to graphic design, includes: the Dessau-period Bauhaus body of designers (Walter Gropius in particular), the Arts & Crafts, Nouveau & Art Deco periods. I also find inspiration when I look to the later years of New International design. For individuals, I admire Milton Glaser, Paul Rand, William Caslon, Benvenuto Cellini, Charles Anderson, and a host of others way too numerous to name.
"The real issue is not talent as an independent element, but talent in relationship to will, desire, and persistence. Talent without these things vanishes and even modest talent with those characteristics grows. "
The truth is, I'm not the best. Nowhere close. If you want someone with a mile-long list of big-name corporate clients, by all means go call up Saatchi & Saatchi and ask for their corporate directory. I'm a designer, an artist, and I like to think a consummate craftsman who appreciates the melding of psychology, science, art and sociology that is the heart of the visuals industry.
I am still learning and will never stop. I will never consider myself best but will never let that stop me from acting as though I can someday be so. It's the core behind the motto Ars longa, Vita Brevis: "Art is Long, Life is Short."
